Care & Materials

What each material is, and how to keep it looking right

Three materials make up the whole range. None of them needs special products; all of them dislike standing water and solvents.

Birch plywood

Thin birch veneers glued in layers with the grain crossed, so the panels stay flat. It is not solid wood, and we do not describe it as such. We finish it with a clear matt lacquer and leave the layered edge visible. Birch varies from sheet to sheet, so the grain on your piece will not match the photograph exactly.

  • Wipe with a damp, well-wrung cloth and dry straight away.
  • Use a coaster. The lacquer resists a quick spill, not a glass left standing overnight.
  • Birch yellows slowly in strong direct sun. Hours of it every day will show within a year.
  • Avoid solvents, polish containing silicone and abrasive pads.

Furniture linoleum

A matt sheet made mainly from linseed oil, wood flour and natural pigments on a jute backing, bonded to plywood. It is on the tops of the Lino Top Bedside Table and the Wide Chest only.

  • Clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Avoid solvents and anything abrasive.
  • It is softer than lacquer: a heavy lamp base with a sharp rim can dent it. Put a felt pad under it.
  • New linoleum can show a faint yellow cast, called drying-room film, when it leaves its packaging. It fades in daylight over a few weeks.

Powder-coated steel

Frames and plinths are 20 mm round steel tube with a baked-on powder coat, in cobalt, graphite or chalk; the Perforated Door Cabinet has a powder-coated perforated steel door.

  • Wipe with a damp cloth and dry.
  • Powder coat is tough but not scratch-proof. Lift pieces rather than dragging them, which also protects your floor.
